About Cherokee, Abaco Bahamas |

|
Cherokee is a very unique little fishing village. We are definitely
"off the beaten track" and not yet caught up in the "rat race".
Our settlement, I say settlement because we aren't big enough to
be called a town, is only one mile around, surrounded by water on three sides and extra-wide sidewalks that serve not only for
pedestrians, but for cars and trucks as well. Besides our two-room schoolhouse with 17 students and two teachers handling four subjects in six different grades, we have an "old schoolhouse" which was recently renovated and is now being used as a community center. We have two churches, one Methodist and one Assemblies of God. We have a small Library and a Post Office, a Laundromat, a Boat Haven and Gas Station and one General Store. There is also a cemetery. We are a community of 180 full-time residents, 40 second-home owners who visit whenever they can and an occasional tourist. We like to think of ourselves as "Abaco's best kept secret". We put up a marble and cement monument dedicated to our sailors who were lost at sea, and have another small informational monument giving the history of our Long Dock (the longest wooden dock in the Bahamas) which now reaches 770 feet in length. There is also a local "Wall of Hero's" imprinted with the names of some of our outstanding citizens who have left their mark on our community. Our telephone directory lists everyone by their first name. We also have a famous Bahamian cookbook called Abaco Cooks with a truly authentic collection of recipes used by the first settlers in the 1780's and handed down from Mother to Daughters over the years with recipes still in use today. Well, now you know all there is to know about Cherokee Sound, Abaco. And, if you are a person who enjoys bonefishing, one of our biggest drawing cards, and can put up with a lot of peace and quiet, then you may be a good candidate for a visit. |
